The Writing System: "The Fidel"

Unlike English, which uses separate letters for consonants and vowels, Amharic uses a unique script called the Ge'ez script.

The System: It is an Abugida (አቡጊዳ) : an alphasyllabary system where vowel sounds are attached directly to each consonant.

The Concept: You do not learn isolated letters. Instead, you learn complete syllables ready to speak and read immediately.

The Character: Each character, known as a Fidel (ፊደል), represents a specific Consonant + Vowel combination.

Tip for Grade 1: Listen to how the letter changes shape when a new vowel is added!

The Structure: The 7 Orders

To learn the alphabet, you must master the "matrix." There are 33 Base Consonant Families (the "parents"). Each parent changes shape slightly to create 7 specific vowel sounds.
