Scripture (English) Grade 1
Lesson 22: SPECIAL (Jonah's Fast): Nineveh's Repentance
Day 22
The Waiting Game
Story Narration
Finally, the rain stopped. The sun came out! But Noah couldn't get out yet. There was still water everywhere. The Ark drifted until"bump"it rested on top of the mountains of Ararat. Noah waited. And waited. Being patient is hard!
To check if the ground was dry, Noah opened a window and sent out a black raven. It flew back and forth.
Then he sent out a dove. The dove came back because she couldn't find a place to land.
Seven days later, he sent the dove again. This time, she came back with a fresh olive leaf in her beak! Noah was so happy. The trees were growing again! He waited seven more days and sent the dove out a third time. This time, she didn't come back. She had found a home. The earth was drying out.
Orthodox Theological Explanation
Did you know Noah and his family were on the Ark for about a whole year? That is a long time to be stuck inside with a bunch of animals!
This story teaches us about patience. Sometimes we pray for something, and we want the answer right now. But Noah couldn't force the water to go down. He had to wait for God's timing.
Noah also used wisdom. He used the birds to help him understand what was happening outside. God likes it when we are patient, but He also likes when we use our brains to look for His signs, just like Noah looked for the olive leaf.
Daily Christian Application
Waiting can be one of the hardest things to do, whether you're waiting for your birthday, a holiday, or an answer to a prayer, but Noah shows us that God's timing is always worth the wait. While he was stuck on that boat for a whole year, he didn't give up hope because he knew that God was busy preparing a brand new world for him. You can practice being patient by staying cheerful and trusting God even when things aren't happening as fast as you would like. Use your waiting time to look for "olive leaves"—the small signs of God's goodness and beauty all around you today. Remember that. God hasn't forgotten you; He is simply making sure everything is perfectly ready for the next part of your adventure.
Key Takeaways
- ★ Patience means waiting without complaining.
- ★ God remembers us even when we feel stuck.
- ★ The olive leaf was a sign of new life and hope.
- ★ God's timing is always perfect.
Parallel Verses & Holy Scripture
Genesis 8:1, 6-11 1 God remembered Noah, all the animals, and all the livestock that were with him in the ship; and God made a wind to pass over the earth, and the waters subsided. ... 6 It happened at the end of forty days, that Noah opened the window of the ship which he had made, 7 and he sent out a raven... 8 He sent out a dove... 10 He stayed yet another seven days; and again he sent the dove out of the ship. 11 The dove came to him at evening; and, behold, in her mouth was an olive leaf plucked off. So Noah knew that the waters were abated from the earth.
Psalm 27:14 "Wait for the LORD. Be strong, and let your heart take courage. Yes, wait for the LORD."
Lamentations 3:25 "The LORD is good to those who wait for him, to the soul that seeks him."
Lesson 22: SPECIAL (Jonah's Fast): Responding to God's Representative
- Nineveh's response to Jonah Respecting the Delegated Authority (Priesthood)
📖 Jonah 3:1-2, 3:3-5
Children will develop an understanding of the authority of God’s word and His prophets and that their guidance is from God and for our benefit. The Ninevites listened to Jonah, a fast was proclaimed, and all of them, from the greatest to the least, put on sackcloth. As a result, they received God's forgiveness and mercy. Children can also learn the importance of obedience to God's commands. Jonah's story illustrates the consequences of disobedience but also the blessings that come from following God's will.
