Day 9
The Sneaky Lie

Story Narration

Adam and Eve were happy. But there was someone else in the garden who was not happy. It was a serpent (a snake), but this snake was tricky and mean.

One day, the serpent slithered up to Eve. He whispered, "Did God really say you can't eat from any tree in the garden?"

Eve corrected him, "We can eat from the trees, just not the one in the middle, or we will die."

The serpent laughed. "You won't die! God knows that if you eat it, you will be smart like Him."

Eve looked at the fruit. It looked tasty. It looked pretty. She wanted to be smart. So... crunch. She took a bite. Then she gave some to Adam, and crunch... he took a bite too.

Immediately, they felt strange. They felt guilty. They knew they had done something wrong.

Orthodox Theological Explanation

This is a sad day in the story. It is called "The Fall." The snake (who we know was Satan) told a lie. But he didn't tell a totally obvious lie; he mixed it with a question to make Eve doubt God.

Doubting God is often how trouble starts. Eve started thinking, "Maybe God is keeping something good away from me." But God never holds back good things from His children.

When they disobeyed, they learned about "evil," but it didn't make them happy like the snake promised. Instead, it made them feel ashamed and scared. Sin always promises to be fun, but it always ends up hurting us.

Daily Christian Application

Be very careful when you hear thoughts or whispers that try to make you doubt if God is really good or if His rules are fair. The enemy wants you to think that you are missing out on something fun by following God, but the truth is that God only wants what is absolutely best for you. When you feel tempted to do something you know is wrong, remember that sin always tries to look sweet at first but ends up making us feel sad and hidden from God. It is always better to trust God's Word than to listen to a lie that promises a shortcut to being happy or smart. If you do make a mistake, don't stay hidden—go straight to God and tell Him the truth, because He loves you much more than any mistake you could ever make. Choosing to believe God instead of a lie will keep your heart peaceful and your friendship with Him strong.

Key Takeaways

  • ★ We have an enemy who wants us to disobey God.
  • ★ The enemy tries to make us doubt God's goodness.
  • ★ Adam and Eve chose to listen to the snake instead of God.
  • ★ Disobeying God is called sin.
  • ★ Sin makes us feel guilty and breaks our friendship with God.

Parallel Verses & Holy Scripture

Genesis 3:1-6 1 Now the serpent was more subtle than any animal of the field which the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, Has God really said, You shall not eat of any tree of the garden? 2 The woman said to the serpent, We may eat fruit from the trees of the garden, 3 but not the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of the garden. God has said, You shall not eat of it, neither shall you touch it, lest you die. 4 The serpent said to the woman, You wont surely die, 5 for God knows that in the day you eat it, your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil. 6 When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took some of its fruit, and ate; and she gave some to her husband with her, and he ate.

Proverbs 3:5 "Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and dont lean on your own understanding."

Romans 5:12 "Therefore as sin entered into the world through one man, and death through sin..."
