Lesson 31: God Strengthens His Representatives: Samson

Classroom Presentation & Zoom

Day 31
New Names

Story Narration

When Abram was 99 years old (almost 100!), God appeared to him again. "I am God Almighty," He said. "Walk before me and be blameless."

God decided it was time for a change. He said, "You will no longer be called Abram. Your name is now Abraham, which means 'Father of Many Nations.'"

Then God said, "Your wife Sarai... her name is now Sarah, which means 'Princess' or 'Mother of Nations.'"

God gave them a special sign to mark their bodies, showing they belonged to Him. He promised again: "Sarah will have a son. You will call him Isaac." Abraham laughed because it seemed so impossible for old people to have a baby!

Orthodox Theological Explanation

Names are important. When God changed Abram's name to Abraham, He was changing his identity. Abram meant "Exalted Father," but Abraham meant "Father of a Multitude." Every time someone said, "Hey Abraham!" they were reminding him of God's promise.

God also included Sarah. She wasn't just Abraham's wife; she was a "Princess" in God's story. God made sure they knew that the baby would come from both of them. Even though Abraham laughed, God didn't get mad. He knew He was about to do a miracle.

Daily Christian Application

Your identity is not just about your name or what people say about you, but about who God says you are as His beloved child. When God gave Abraham and Sarah their new names, He was reminding them every day that He had a magnificent and special plan for their lives that would change the whole world. You can think of yourself as a "child of promise" too, because God has written a beautiful story specifically for you that involves your own unique talents and personality. Don't listen to mean words or labels that others might try to put on you; instead, listen to God’s voice which calls you chosen, loved, and purposeful. Every morning when you wake up, remind yourself that you belong to the King of the universe and that He is going to do amazing things through your life today.

Key Takeaways

  • ★ God changed Abram to Abraham (Father of Many).
  • ★ God changed Sarai to Sarah (Princess).
  • ★ God gave them a new identity.
  • ★ God's plan involved both Abraham and Sarah.
