Day 27
A Lie in Egypt

Story Narration

Abram traveled for a long time and finally reached the land God promised (Canaan). But soon, there was no food in the land because of a famine (no rain for crops). So, Abram went down to Egypt to find food. Abram got scared. He looked at his wife, Sarai. She was very beautiful. Abram thought, "The Egyptians might hurt me so they can take her."

So Abram came up with a plan. "Tell them you are my sister," he told Sarai. (She was actually his half-sister, but they were married, so it was a half-truth designed to deceive).

When they got to Egypt, the Pharaoh took Sarai to his palace and gave Abram lots of gifts. But God was watching. God sent sickness to Pharaoh's house to warn him. Pharaoh realized the truth and said to Abram, "Why did you lie to me? Take your wife and go!"

Orthodox Theological Explanation

Even heroes of the Bible make mistakes. Abram had just shown great faith by moving, but now he showed fear by lying. He was scared the Egyptians would hurt him, so he tried to protect himself instead of trusting God to protect him.

Lying always makes things complicated. A "half-truth" is still a whole lie if you are trying to trick someone. But look at God's grace: even though Abram messed up, God protected Sarai and kept His promise to Abram. God is faithful even when we are not.

Daily Christian Application

When you feel scared, it can be tempting to tell a "half-truth" or a little lie to try and protect yourself, but Abram's story shows us that honesty is always the better path. Even when things feel risky, trusting God to take care of you is much safer than trying to fix things with a lie that only makes everything more complicated. If you do make a mistake and find yourself being dishonest, don't be afraid to admit it quickly and ask for forgiveness, because God is always ready to help you start fresh. He is so faithful that He even protects us when we mess up, but He much prefers it when we walk in the truth with a brave and open heart. Choosing to be honest today shows that you believe God is big enough to protect you in any situation without you needing to hide behind a lie.

Key Takeaways

  • ★ Even good people make mistakes.
  • ★ Fear can make us do silly things, like lie.
  • ★ We should trust God to protect us instead of lying.
  • ★ God protected Abram and Sarai despite their mistake.

Parallel Verses & Holy Scripture

Genesis 12:10-13, 17 10 There was a famine in the land. Abram went down into Egypt to live as a foreigner there... 11 ...he said to Sarai his wife... 13 Please say that you are my sister, that it may be well with me for your sake, and that my soul may live because of you. ... 17 The LORD plagued Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai, Abram's wife.

Proverbs 12:22 "Lying lips are an abomination to the LORD, but those who deal truly are his delight."

Psalm 56:3 "What time I am afraid, I will put my trust in you."

Lesson 27: SPECIAL (GREAT FAST): The Parable of the Prodigal Son

📖 Luke 15:11-32

🌟 MEMORY VERSE OF THE WEEK
«They all ate and were filled, and twelve baskets of leftover fragments were taken up.»
📖 Matthew 14:20
💡 CORE SPIRITUAL OBJECTIVE

Children will develop an understanding of our repentance and God’s great forgiveness. Children can learn about the unconditional love and forgiveness of God through the father's response to the prodigal son. Despite the son's rebellion and foolishness, the father eagerly welcomes him back with love and forgiveness. Children can also understand the importance of repentance and turning back to God when they have made mistakes or wrong choices. Like the prodigal son, they can learn that God is always ready to forgive and restore them when they come to Him with a repentant heart. Children can understand that there is joy in heaven when a sinner repents. They can learn that God rejoices when they turn away from sin and come back to Him, just as the father rejoiced over the return of his prodigal son.
