Lesson 8: Our God is the True God

Classroom Presentation & Zoom

Day 8
Two Trees and a Rule

Story Narration

In the middle of the beautiful Garden of Eden, there were two very special trees. One was the Tree of Life. The other was the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.

God showed Adam around and said, "You can eat fruit from ANY tree in this whole garden. Enjoy it! But..." God pointed to the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. "You must not eat from that one tree. If you eat from it, you will surely die."

It was one simple rule. Just one!

Then God looked at Adam and saw that he was alone. The animals had partners, but Adam didn't. God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone." So God put Adam into a deep sleep, took a rib from his side, and made a woman. Her name was Eve. Now Adam had a best friend and a wife.

Orthodox Theological Explanation

Why did God give Adam a rule? Was He trying to be mean? No! Rules are there to keep us safe. Imagine if your mom said, "Don't touch the hot stove." She isn't trying to ruin your fun; she wants to keep you from getting burned. God wanted Adam and Eve to trust Him and obey Him for their own good.

We also learn that God cares about our feelings. He saw that Adam was lonely. God created people to be together. We need friends, family, and community. It is a gift to have people who love us.

Daily Christian Application

God gives us rules because He loves us and wants to keep us safe from things that could hurt our hearts or our bodies. Just like your parents might have rules about crossing the street or being kind to others, God's instructions are like a protective fence around our lives. When you choose to obey even when it’s hard, you are showing God that you trust Him and believe that His way is the very best way. It's also wonderful to know that God sees when we are lonely and gives us friends and family to walk beside us. You can be a "helper" like Eve was by being a good friend to someone who looks sad or needs a hand today. Sharing God's love through obedience and kindness makes life in His world a lot more beautiful for everyone.

Key Takeaways

  • ★ God gave Adam freedom to eat from almost every tree.
  • ★ God gave one rule to protect Adam and test his trust.
  • ★ God saw that it was not good for Adam to be alone.
  • ★ God created Eve to be Adam's helper and friend.
  • ★ Rules are given by God because He loves us.

Parallel Verses & Holy Scripture

Genesis 2:16-18, 21-22 16 The LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; 17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, you shall not eat of it; for in the day that you eat of it you will surely die. 18 The LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him. ... 21 The LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall on the man, and he slept; and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place. 22 He made the rib, which the LORD God had taken from the man, into a woman, and brought her to the man.

Ecclesiastes 4:9 "Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor."

John 14:15 "If you love me, keep my commandments."
