Scripture (English) Grade 1
Lesson 12: Families, a Blessing From God: Abraham, Sarah, & Isaac
Day 12
Two Brothers, Two Gifts
Story Narration
Outside the garden, Adam and Eve started a family. They had two sons. The older brother was named Cain, and the younger brother was named Abel. They were very different. Cain was a farmer who loved digging in the dirt and growing food. Abel was a shepherd who took care of fluffy sheep.
One day, it was time to give a gift to God to say "thank you." Cain brought some of the fruit and veggies from his farm. But Abel brought the very best firstborn lamb from his flock.
God looked at the gifts, but more importantly, He looked at their hearts. He was happy with Abel's gift, but He was not happy with Cain's gift. Cain's face turned red and angry. He frowned deeply. He was jealous of his brother.
Orthodox Theological Explanation
Why did God like Abel's gift better? Was God hungry for lamb chops? No! The Bible tells us later that Abel gave his gift with faith. He gave the "first and best" to God.
Cain gave some of his crops, but his heart wasn't right. He was probably just going through the motions, or maybe he kept the best fruit for himself. God cares more about how we give than what we give.
Imagine if you drew a picture for your mom. If you threw it at her and said, "Here, take it," she wouldn't like it much. But if you hugged her and said, "I made this because I love you," she would treasure it. That is the difference between Cain and Abel.
Daily Christian Application
When you share your toys with a friend or help your parents with a chore, remember that God is looking at your heart more than the actual thing you are doing. If you do something with a grumpy attitude, it’s not as sweet to God as when you do it with a happy and thankful spirit. Try to give God your "first and best" by praying to Him first thing in the morning or by doing your very best work on your school assignments. You don't have to be perfect; you just have to be real and show Him that you love Him with all your heart. Being a "cheerful giver" like Abel will fill your own heart with joy and make God smile because He loves to see His children enjoy being kind.
Key Takeaways
- ★ Cain was a farmer; Abel was a shepherd.
- ★ We should give God our very best, not just leftovers.
- ★ God looks at our hearts, not just our actions.
- ★ Jealousy makes us feel angry inside.
Parallel Verses & Holy Scripture
Genesis 4:1-5 1 The man knew Eve his wife. She conceived, and gave birth to Cain, and said, I have gotten a man with the LORD's help. 2 Again she gave birth, to Cain's brother Abel. Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground. 3 As time passed, it happened that Cain brought an offering of the fruit of the ground to the LORD. 4 Abel also brought some of the firstborn of his flock and of its fat. The LORD respected Abel and his offering, 5 but he didnt respect Cain and his offering. Cain was very angry, and the expression on his face fell.
Hebrews 11:4 "By faith Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain..."
Corinthians 9:7 "Let each man give according as he has determined in his heart... for God loves a cheerful giver."
