Day 33
The Big Ask

Story Narration

The visitors got up to leave. They were heading toward Sodom, the city where Lot lived. God told Abraham a secret: "The city of Sodom is very wicked. I have to go down and judge it." Abraham was worried. He knew Lot was there! He walked with God and started to ask Him a question.

"God, if there are 50 good people in Sodom, will you still destroy it?"

God said, "If I find 50 good people, I will spare the city."

Abraham asked again, "What about 45?"

God said, "I will spare it for 45."What about 40? 30? 20?"

Finally, Abraham whispered, "Lord, please don't be angry... what if there are only 10?"

God answered patiently, "For the sake of ten, I will not destroy it."

Orthodox Theological Explanation

This is a conversation about prayer. Abraham was standing in the gap for others. This is called "intercession""praying for someone else.

Abraham wasn't trying to change God's mind; he was discovering God's mercy. He learned that God doesn't want to punish people. God was willing to save a whole city for just a tiny handful of good people.

It teaches us that we can talk to God honestly. We can ask Him to help our friends, our family, and our cities. God listens to the prayers of His friends.

Daily Christian Application

You have a very special privilege as a child of God, and that is to "stand in the gap" for your friends, family, and even your city by talking to God on their behalf. Just as Abraham prayed patiently for the people of Sodom, you can ask God to protect, help, and show mercy to the people around you who might not even know Him yet. God loves it when we care enough about others to intercede for them, and He is always listening for your voice to bring Him your concerns. Your prayers are powerful and can make a huge difference in someone else’s life, even if you are just a young person. Today, think of one person who might be going through a hard time and ask God to show them His love and kindness in a special way.

Key Takeaways

  • ★ Abraham prayed for the people of Sodom.
  • ★ God is patient and willing to listen to our questions.
  • ★ God is fair; He protects the righteous.
  • ★ We should pray for others (intercede).

Parallel Verses & Holy Scripture

Genesis 18:23-26, 32 23 Abraham drew near, and said, Will you consume the righteous with the wicked? 24 What if there are fifty righteous within the city?... 26 The LORD said, If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare all the place for their sake. ... 32 He said, Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak just once more. What if ten are found there? He said, I will not destroy it for the tens sake.

James 5:16 "The effective, earnest prayer of a righteous man is powerfully effective."

Timothy 2:1 "I exhort therefore, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and givings of thanks, be made for all men."
