Scripture (English) Grade 1
Lesson 36: An Introduction to the Books & Sections of the Bible
Day 36
God Hears the Boy
Story Narration
As Isaac grew up, there was trouble in the tents. Hagars son, Ishmael, made fun of little Isaac. Sarah got very angry and told Abraham, "Send Hagar and Ishmael away!" Abraham was sad because Ishmael was his son too. But God said, "Listen to Sarah. I will take care of Ishmael."
So Hagar and Ishmael walked into the hot desert. Soon, their water ran out. Hagar cried because she thought they would die. She put Ishmael under a bush and sat far away so she wouldn't have to watch.
But God heard the boy crying. An angel called out, "Hagar! Do not be afraid. God has heard the boy."
Suddenly, God opened Hagars eyes, and she saw a well of water! They drank and were saved. God was with Ishmael as he grew up in the wild.
Orthodox Theological Explanation
This is a hard story about family conflict. But even when families break apart or people are sent away, God does not abandon them.
God heard Ishmael crying. It doesn't say Ishmael was praying; it just says God heard his voice. God cares about the tears of children.
God opened Hagars eyes to see the water. Sometimes the solution to our problem is right in front of us, but we are too sad or scared to see it. We can ask God to "open our eyes" to see His help.
Daily Christian Application
It is so comforting to know that whenever you feel sad, or even when you just have a little cry because things are hard, God is listening to your voice and truly cares about your tears. Just like He heard Ishmael crying under the bush in the desert and sent an angel to help, He is always paying close attention to you and ready to provide exactly what you need. You don't ever have to be afraid that you are alone or forgotten, because the God of the whole universe has His ears open to the prayers and cries of every child. Whenever you feel overwhelmed, ask God to "open your eyes" so you can see the ways He is already trying to help you, just like He showed Hagar the well of water. Trusting in a God who hears you will help you stay brave and hopeful, no matter what family situation or difficulty you might be facing.
Key Takeaways
- ★ God listens when children cry.
- ★ God takes care of single moms and outcasts.
