Scripture (English) Grade 1
Lesson 28: House Blessings & Holy Water
Day 28
The Choice
Story Narration
Abram and his nephew Lot were very rich. They had so many sheep, goats, and cows that their herdsmen started fighting. "Hey, this is our grass!"No, get your sheep out of our water!" There just wasn't enough room for both of them.
Abram was the uncle, so he could have picked the best spot. But Abram was a peacemaker. He took Lot to a high hill and said, "Lot, look around. If you go left, I will go right. If you go right, I will go left. You choose first."
Lot looked down. He saw the Jordan Valley. It was green, lush, and full of water, like a garden. It looked perfect. He also saw the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah nearby.
Lot chose the best-looking land for himself.
Abram stayed in the rocky hills of Canaan. But God whispered to Abram, "Don't worry. Look as far as you can see"all this land will be yours someday."
Orthodox Theological Explanation
Abram showed us how to be generous. Instead of fighting for the "best toy" or the "best seat," he let someone else choose first. He trusted that God would take care of him no matter where he lived.
Lot made a choice based only on what his eyes saw. The valley looked pretty, but the people living there (in Sodom) were very wicked. Sometimes what looks good on the outside isn't actually good for us. Abram got the dusty hills, but he had God's blessing, which is worth more than all the green grass in the world.
Daily Christian Application
Being a peacemaker often means being willing to let someone else choose first, like when you let a friend pick the game you play or a sibling take the "best" seat in the car. Just like Abram showed generosity by letting his nephew Lot pick the greenest valley, you can show God's love by being unselfish and not fighting for the first place. You don't have to worry about missing out because God is watching your kind heart and He promises to take care of all your needs in His own special way. When you choose to be kind instead of competitive, you are making room for God's blessings to flow into your life and the lives of those around you. Real happiness doesn't come from having the "best" things, but from having the peace of God in your heart because you chose to be a friend and a helper.
Key Takeaways
- ★ It is better to share than to fight.
- ★ Abram was unselfish and let Lot choose first.
- ★ Lot chose by what he saw; Abram walked by faith.
- ★ God blessed Abram for his generosity.
Parallel Verses & Holy Scripture
Genesis 13:8-11, 14 8 Abram said to Lot, Please, let there be no strife between me and you, and between my herdsmen and your herdsmen; for we are relatives. 9 Isnt the whole land before you?... If you go to the left hand, then I will go to the right. Or if you go to the right hand, then I will go to the left. 10 Lot lifted up his eyes, and saw all the plain of the Jordan, that it was well watered everywhere... 11 So Lot chose the Plain of the Jordan for himself. ... 14 The LORD said to Abram... "Lift up your eyes... for all the land which you see, I will give to you."
Philippians 2:3 "Doing nothing through rivalry or through conceit, but in humility, each counting others better than himself."
Matthew 5:9 "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God."
